Sandhill Crane Hunt — Texas Panhandle Playas
About This Hunt
The Texas Panhandle hosts the largest concentration of sandhill cranes in North America during fall migration — hundreds of thousands of birds stage on the playa lakes of the Llano Estacado from October through December. Panhandle Playa Outfitters offers guided crane hunts on private land adjacent to these critical staging areas, with hunt setups in harvested grain fields where cranes feed during the day.
Sandhill cranes are large, challenging birds — decoying these wary birds to within range requires full-body decoys, precise blind placement, and skilled calling. When it works, a flight of cranes dropping into a spread of big decoys with wings set is one of the most spectacular sights in wing shooting. Birds average 8–12 pounds and are excellent table fare — often called the "ribeye of the sky."
Texas crane season runs from November through February, with the Panhandle providing the best access to the Central Flyway's primary staging birds. Daily bag limit of 3 cranes. No draw required — only a Texas hunting license and federal light goose conservation order permit.
